The Department of Community Development implements four major programmes namely; Food Security Pack, Community Skills Development, Community Self Help Initiative, and Livelihoods and Empowerment Support Scheme.
The Food Security Pack Programme is aimed at helping vulnerable but viable farmer households. In the year 2018/2019 farming season the programme has supported 54,663 households with farming inputs countrywide. The farming inputs that each household received were Maize/Orange Maize seed, Beans, Soya beans, Groundnuts, Cowpeas, Urea and Compound D Fertilizer. All the inputs that were distributed are climate change responsive.
Before the distribution of the 2018/2019 farming inputs to the 54,663 households, intensive training were conducted in Conservation Farming methods, Food processing /handling and Preservation and Food Bank Management. The Orange Maize is being promoted to respond to reducing stunting as it is rich in vitamin A. As at 31st December 2018 all the seeds were distributed to all the Districts in
